An aptitude is a component of a competency to do a certain kind of work at a certain level, which can also be considered "talent". Aptitudes may be physical or mental. Aptitude is not knowledge, understanding, learned or acquired abilities (skills) or attitude. The innate nature of aptitude is in contrast to achievement, which represents knowledge or ability that is gained. In this research work, a new system is designed to help build a web based apptitude test system for recruitment purpose. The system maintains a database of aptitude test questions which applicants are expected to answer. The system scores the aplicants at the end of the test and publish result of the test. Hence a search engine is designed to query the system for a particular category of applicants based on their applications and scores in the test.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Deciding on a career is an important decision and it is natural to feel confused or even stressed out about it. One popular method that is used by many people is a career assessment test. These tests help to suggest fields and types of jobs that the person would most likely enjoy and find rewarding in the long term too. A secondary aspect of the career assessment quiz is to help people learn more about their strengths, weaknesses, and interests.
Career assessment quizzes use many factors to determine compatible job types for people. Most commonly, they ask people about their skills, values, likes or dislikes, and their abilities. By measuring the strongest and weakest areas in each of these categories, the test can deliver more compatible and accurate results. Keep in mind that there are various types of career tests, such as aptitude (or skill) tests, personality tests, or tests based mostly on interests.
Aptitude tests hone in on individuals’ strengths and key skills. In this manner, it helps to pinpoint the jobs that they would be good at. For example, a typical career aptitude test would ask questions about verbal and numerical reasoning, language skills, perception, technical skills and special abilities. While this can help to provide jobs that the person would excel at, there is a possibility that they would not find the nature of the job interesting.
1.2 Statement of Problem
Conducting aptitude test is one of the most difficult things during the process of staff recruitment. Employees are invited to seat for the test and at the end, marking the papers takes a lot of time. Result of the test delays for some days before it is out. These problems make recruitment process cumbersome. Therefore, there is need for a web based aptitude test system for recruitment purpose.
1.3 Objectives of the Project
The general objective of the study is to :
(i) Develop and maintain a database of applicants in every field of work.
(ii) Design an online aptitude test system
(iii) To publish result of the test online.
(iv) To develop software that will aid management in recruiting staff.
1.4 Significance of the Study
This work could be useful for personnel managers or officers in an organization as well as those involved in research work on personnel management and recruitment system. Hence, this research work will be of immense assistance to the organizational environment because management will be able to find the best solution to the various personnel problems most especially during recruitment of staff.
1.5 Scope of the Project
The scope of this study has been limited to designing an efficient and effective aptitude test system. The software developed will enable collection of applicants CV and maintain a database of all the aptitude test result.
1.6 Limitations
Generally, a study of this nature would have some constraints such as time, money and data collection method. I wish to say that the structured questionnaire used and interview has the limitation of rigidity (people finding it difficult to respond to questionnaires) thereby restricting the information obtained.
Lack of finance is also another obstacle that hindered a wider consultations and research on the project. Some materials may have some cost implications which may be above the budgeted money for the research work.
