This study is designed to show how cooperative societies can alleviate poverty in Arochukwu North Local Government Area, Abia State.
The sample consist of 25 farmer cooperative society members, 25 marketing cooperative society members, 25 credit and thrift cooperative society members and 25 consumer cooperative society members.
The main instrument used for collecting data was questionnaire. The sample was collected through random sampling techniques and statistical method used for data analysis in sample percentage.
The background of this project states clearly how cooperative can be used as an instrument for poverty alleviation in Arochukwu North Local Government Area.
This could however be understood when we define cooperative as an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic social and cultural needs and aspirations through jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise. They are based on values of self help democracy, equally, equity and solidarity cooperative members believe ethical values of honesty openness social responsibility and caring for others.
However, people pool themselves and their resources together as a result of inability to solve their problem single handed due to poverty, this ugly trend has eaten deep into the blood stream of the people and poses the major threat of the economic well being of the people of Arochukwu Local Government Area. To redress this urgly trend which militates against the economic development of the society and which has been the cause of the suffering of the common man, adequate measure and policy should be put in place.
In view of the government effort the alleviate poverty with several programmes and measures has been put in place to better the lives of the masses, such programmes are Family Support Programme (FSP), Better Life Programme (BLW) for the Rural Women and Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) etc. The government had also identified cooperative as channel through which these programmes could be implemented poverty and also the means through which government incentives and aids get the grass roots level and proper and result achieved.
It is however at this point that this project tends to review the role of cooperative as an instrument for poverty alleviation.
Many advanced societies have embraced the cooperative form of enterprise while others are embracing it at a fast rate. This is based on the belief that the organization has a lot to offer these to economics in their bid to achieve Power Alleviation and to enhance the standard of living of their people. Historically, cooperative have developed in response to some difficult situation to which a group of people were subjected visa vis the rest of the society.
Consequently, the underprivileged people have gathered to protect themselves by providing those things that they could not obtain from any other source through joint action.
The general low income of must people in the rural area is a pre – requisite for their group action of establishing viable enterprise, cooperative organization is seen by the government as an instrument that is capable of supplementing government efforts in raising development capital and thereby assisting the growth of the economics.
