As a project work that requires a case study of one or more co-operative societies, material have been extensively utilized. This book is prepared in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of ………..and is meant to look into the cause and reason and failure in co-operative societies in Nigeria. Co-operatives have always been considered as instrument for achieving the needed socio-economic transformation of the economic sector especially in the rural areas of the country. However, despite the various efforts made by governments. Co-operatives are yet to make the expected impact anticipated by the country. This has been as a result of certain factors, which this book attempts to analyze properly.
This book disseminates the numerous problem and reasons of failure in co-operative societies. The style of presentation is simple and comprehensible. Also, the research methodology could easily understand but the reader, and references have been provided which were used in the course of the writer up.
The book contains five chapters which deals on new but related topics.
The last chapter deals more on the subject mater. It is also devoted to solving some of the problem causing failure in co-operative societies in Nigeria.
Cooperative have been in existence in Nigeria right from the pre-colonial days. Infact, co-operatives date back as early as there was communal life co-operative were not as sophisticated then as they are now, yet they served useful purposes which characterized communal living of the people.
Co-operative movements officially dated from 1935 after the submission of the Strickland report in 194 on the establishment of co-operative society ordinance in 1935. This period from 1935 was attributed to the period of modern co-operative then the movement became formalize and consolidated.
In addition the various governments have made different attempts at ensuring that they do not toil, especially in their main or mayor objectives. Some of these encouraging and France efforts made by government include the establishment of Federal Ministries of Employment, labour and productivity, and ministry of agriculture prospectively, the establishment of three co-operative college in the country, formation of the agricultural co-operative marketing association, among others. All these are aimed at ensuring that co-operative do not fail or assume a backward position in the economic transformation of the country. A lot of co-operative societies at different levels that is, Apex, secondary and primary have been set up in the country recently. Also, government officials are usually assigned to monitor and inspect these societies to ensure their compliance with the national standards for co-operative societies and to ensure that their viability to the nation. Despite these moves, co-operative societies tend to record failures in their operations such as low productivity, poor membership. Low patronage, inability to better the living standard of the oreopher, over dependence on government aids and sponsorship etc.
