Computerized Tourism Information System project is aimed at creating a system that will enable travelers and government locate a particular tourism center and the facilities obtainable in the center. As the world is turning into a global village with almost every aspect of human endavour getting computerized, the tourists looks forward to access to global information on tourism with particular attention to tourism centers across the globe.
This project research involves the design and implementation of a computerized system aimed at overcoming the undesirable problem associated with the manual system. Here, we design a computer program that will
__ Replace the existing manual system.
__Be able to store, access and retrieve information.
__Facilitate the prompt access to information for tourists.
In this project, the implementation of the computerized system will be carried out using VISUAL BASIC (V.B 6.0) and HTML
1.0 Introduction
Tourism is travel for predominantly recreational or leisure purposes or the provision of services to support this leisure travel. The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people who "travel to and stay in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited". Tourism has become a popular global leisure activity.
Tourism is vital for many countries, due to the income generated by the consumption of goods and services by tourists, the taxes levied on businesses in the tourism industry, and the opportunity for employment in the service industries associated with tourism. These service industries include transportation services such as cruise ships and taxis, accommodation such as hotels, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues, and other hospitality industry services such as spas and resorts
1.1 Background of the Study
Nigeria, with a land mass of over 356,000 square miles is a country with spectacular sights ,a wide range of fauna and exciting places for vacationing, exploration and sightseeing. The country is blessed with tropical rain forests, savannah grasslands, mangrove swamps and the sahel savannah near the Sahara.
Visitors to Nigeria will be thrilled by the marvels of nature that abound in the land, rare, amazing plants and animals seen only on special television programmes or magazines. These plants and animals live in their natural habitats undisturbed by man. Nature has also endowed Nigeria with many natural resources and with some of the wonders of the natural world, which can be viewed by visitors to those locations.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
As the government of the country seeks way to promote the economy of the nation through development of tourist centers, efforts are being put in place to advertise these tourist centers for foreign attractions. Doing this is not an easy task, as government needs to collect enough information on the existing tourist centers in the country and give then adequate publicity over the radio, TV, Internet, etc. It is much difficult to accomplish this, as most of the tourism outlets cannot easily be located. Hence, the problem of controlling the tourism industry activities and thereby creating avenues for loss of revenue as lack of awareness affects tourism centers income.
1.3 Objective Of The Study
This project work is aimed at examining the problems faced by tourists and proffering solutions to it by designing a program that will enable government of Nigeria to advertise tourism centers and also provides facilities for tourists to make their bookings online.
1.4 Significance Of The Study
This project work is being designed to enable the tourists, and Nigerian Government to have good information at a close range, information that are needed for every day’s tourist activities. It will also bring to the mind of the tourists that the use of website cannot be over emphasized, considering the immeasurable blessing count that should accrue from design and development of such project which will range from viewing on-line the various and several tourism centers across Nigeria. The facilities obtainable in any of the tourism centers. This will also help the Nigerian government to monitor tourism in Nigeria with view to generating income to boast our economy.
1.5 Scope of The Project
In developing a computerized tourism information system for Nigerian Tourism Board, we will always keep in mind to provide to the users the best usability, flexibility and security of data. The project will cover the following areas:
1.6 Limitations
The project will be restricted to the tourism booking and publishing of tourism centers on the website.
Due to short frame of time and money constraint, research and reference were not extensively made.
