INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUN OF THE STUDY

History has shown that development can occur when every member contributes and participate in the development, hence development should be seen as a collective responsibility of all the people that makes up the society irrespective of sex, age, class and creed.

One cannot therefore over emphasis the importance which the co-operative movement can play in Nigeria, especially in area of food shortage.  It is certain that the co-operative movement plays an increasing significant role in satisfying natural, social and political needs of the rural and urban dwellers in Nigeria.   It was as a result of the significant role of the co-operative societies that Federal Republic of Nigeria in her third national Development Plan (1975 – 80) had a policy objective of foresting the growth of growth of co-operative movement.  As instrument for achieving increased agricultural productivity and rural transformation.  The recently launched “Family Economy Advancement” and Better Life for women development is another move made by the government to ensure women participate fully in national development co-operative societies are organized groups, which are created to accomplish one or more functions inducting production, purchasing and supplying and the provision of credit facilities of its members.  Inspite of the government emphasis on the need for Nigeria to form co-opera societies.  In order to achieve self sufficiency in food production especially during this period of depressed economy, we are yet to experience women’s full participation in co-operative societies, Ijere (1981) continted that out of a population of about 80 million people only 2.4% of Nigeria women were co-operators.

However, it has become imperative to test the contribution and roles of women unco-operatives in national development with particular reference to Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.

1.2     STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

From the background of the study it should be understood that modern co-operative societies were formed in Njikoka Local Government Area to caten for the socio-economic needs of the women.  It is also aimed at serving as instrument for national development.

But it is however surprising that despite existence of women co-operative societies in the said local government, the various communities that constitute the local government are still in their primary stage of development even the women co-operative themselves are still suffering from poor standard of living.

1.3     PURPOSE OF STUDY

The purpose of this study is to:

To examine the level of women participation is National development through co-operative in Njikoka Local Government Area.

To find out the level of performance and the extent to which they are achieving or family to achieve co-operative development in local government area.

To find out the problems that face these women co-operative societies from achieving the objective of development and suggest ways to enhancing the effectiveness of these co-operatives.

To determine the contributions of these women co-operative in the provision of infrastructure and agricultural development of Njikoka Local Government.

1.4     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study is significance for the following reasons:

It will highlight the level of women’s roles or National Development through co-operative societies in Njikoka Local Government Area.

It will climate doubts as to whether or not women co-operative are of any significance unco-operative development especially the case of Nwanne-di-na-mba Njikoka  Women F.M.C.S Ltd.

This study will guide other researchers who may wish to operate along co-operatives lines especially as it concerns women in co-operatives development through co-operative in Njikoka Local Government Area. The significance of this study is not conspicuous in the service as in did to national development especially in this period of economic recession in which government wants all hands on deck to increase food production.  The study will also find solution to some problems associates with co-operative in particular and women contributions in co-operative development in general.

Finally the information in this study will be of great help to researchers who might wish to further their research into areas of co-operative development not covered by other studies.

1.5     LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study is limited to selected registered women co-operative societies in Njikoka Local Government Area.

The limitation of these selected co-operative societies does not necessary climate the chance of making valued conclusions on the entire population of Njikoka Local Government Area as the societies are fully representatives of the situation in the Local Government generally.

1.6     DEFINITION OF TERMS

For the purpose of clarification, the terms used in the study have been defined.

PRODUCTION CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY

This is retail establishment which sometimes include a wholesale business that is operated by some of all of its customers to save marketing cost.

MULTI – PURPOSE CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY

This is a situation where a number of co-operative society some under one umbrella.

SUBSISTENCE
