CHAPTER ONE

1.0     INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The idea to involve the rural people fully through their then unions, age grades, co-operative societies and other similar organizations in planning and implementing policies designed to improve their economic, social, political and cultural development has become the main focus for both the governments and well meaning individuals. This emphasis is not uncounted with the ever-widening urban rural income differential.

The quality of life in the rural areas, access to public service and amenities, opportunity for work and self-improvement are all manifestly lacking. The prevailing economic depression in the country worsens the situation with its attendant rise in general price level, inflation, unemployment, low income, low savings and low investment. The above situation weights heavily on the populace, especially the lower starts of the rural masses whose deplorable socio-economic conditions call for urgent attention.

In this regard, therefore, the role of our women folk in rural development through co-operative societies cannot be over emphasized especially as it concerns Nkanu local government area of Enugu State.

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

From the background of the study, it should be understood that modern women co-operative societies were formed in Nkanu local government area to cater for the socio-economic needs of the women. It is also aimed at savings as instrument for rural development. But it is however, surprising that despite the existing women co-operatives in the said Local Government, the various communities that constitute the local government are still in their primary stage of development. Even  the women cooperators themselves are still suffering from poor standard of living.

Moreover the general objective of this paper is to examine the contributions of women generally to rural development. Specifically, the paper has the following objectives.

  1. To find out the specific contributions of women in rural development in Nkanu local government area.
  2. To point out some hindrance that face woman in their bid to contribute to the rural development; and
  3. Finally to recommend possible ways of improving upon the contributions of women towards rural development.

1.3     PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to:

  1. Examine the level or role of women in rural development through co-operative in Nkanu Local Government Area.
  2. Find out the performance and the extent to which the women are achieving or failing to achieve rural development in the said local government.
  3. Find out the problems that face these women co-operatives thereby hindering them from achieving t he objectives of development and to suggest ways of enhancing the effectiveness of these co-operatives.
  4. And to determine the contributions of these women co-operatives I the provision of infrastructure and agricultural development of Nkanu Local Government Area.

1.4     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

1)      The significant of this study has the following reasons:

The significance of this study is most conspicuous in its service as an aid to rural development especially in this period of economic recession in which government wants all hands on desk to increase food product.

  1. This study will guide other researcher who may wish to operate along co-operative lives especially as it concerns women in rural development through co-operative in Nkanu Local Government.
  2. It will  highlight the level of women’s roles in rural development through co-operatives in Nkanu Local Government Area.
  3. The study will also find solutions to some problems associated with co-operatives in particular, nad rural development in general.
  4. It will eliminate doubts as to whether or not women co-operatives are of any significance in rural development especially in the case of Nkanu women.
  5. Finally, the information in this study will be of enormous help to researchers into areas of rural development not covered by this study.

1.5     SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study is limited to selected registered women co-operatives societies in Nkanu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The limitation of these selected co-operative societies does not necessarily eliminate the chance of making valid conclusions on the entire population of Nkanu Local Government Area, as the societies are fairly representative of the situation on the ground in local government generally.

In the course of the research work, the researcher encountered some constraints, which affected the final output of the study. These limitations, amongst others include:

a)      Attitudes of Respondents

The negative attitude fo some respondents to the researchers request for audience in answering questions or filling the questionnaires also constituted a constraint to the assignment.

b)      Time

The time available for the completion of the research study was not adequate. This was because the researcher was mandated to report her findings within a fixed time limit during the academic session.

c)       Cost

For a maximum fulfillment of the objectives of this study, the researcher needed to visit all the offices of UDBN PLC to obtain first-hand information. This, she could not achieve due to the huge expenses that would incurred in the process.
