WOMEN EMANCIPATION THROUGH CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY (A CASE STUDY OF NWANNE – DI-NA-MBA COOPERATIVE SOCIETY ASATA ENUGU, ENUGU STATE)

ABSTRACT

This study is aimed at defining out the possible role of cooperative society I the emancipation of women or their liberation in Asata.  A case study of Nwanne di na mba Women Cooperatives.  This is in view of the fact that women in this part of the country are only seen to have their portion in the kitchen and housewives.  Thus standing to support the saying “women education ends in the kitchen”.  This station persisted up till about 1929 when we had Aba women riot, which made women realize that they could participate in other social, economical, and political activities. Women emancipation could be said to be the act of giving the women equal right with the men counter poart either politically.  Legally, socially and economically.  This could lead to a better living standard for all since their economic emancipation could mean more hands going into production and subsequently more food production.

This research work was carried out in Asata through the study of registered women cooperative societies randomly chosen to cover the whole section and fribe.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0     INTRODUCTION

The lack of a full-scale involvement of women in economical and political activities of the country previously made it impossible to know the roles and contribution women have contribute dot the growth of this country.

Women emancipation through co-operative society may not be fully appreciated and understood without addressing such issues as “what is women emancipation”, “what is co-operative societies”? And how can women be emancipated through cooperative societies”?

Women emancipation women being liberated or lifted up from a burden.  And cooperative societies according to (Onoh, 1996 Page 1) defined cooperative societies as a group of people with common goals, who run an enterprise in order to achieve their aims and objectives.

Women emancipation through cooperative societies could be said to be the involvement of women through cooperative societies, which help to liberate them and be independence and solve their daily needs, by themselves.

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The flight for women emancipation in Nigeria could be traced to the Aba women Riot of 1929 which exposed the women to their true position and ability, giving birth to women pilots.  Journalists, lawyers, duters. Could contribute to the growth and demepement of their Communities Local Government State and the nation at large.  This has led to the saying “what a man can do, a woman can do and even better.

Before now, women where said to be relevant only in child birth, cooking and overall fairly management and not to be involved in economic social or political responsibilities.

They were poorly regarded in the society and as much were demand most of their  human right.  During the “industrial revolution” much was not known of women economic activities, it was later that if became clear that women could participate in the formation of co-operative especially in the trading and consumer co-operative societies.  This was also the same with Nigeria, that after the Aba women riot were accorded to carry out women in the Northern part of Nigeria are generally confued due to religious retractions.

Even through same of these women are enlightened and are becoming more vocal in campaigning against such practices.

Today in Nigeria, government has placed much emphasis on the emancipation and empowerment of women by encouraging them to come together and from co-operative organizations and providing money as loans through various channels like “Better life for rural women” family support programme” and family economic advancement programme” all aimed at the emancipation of women and leading to women becoming the bread winner in most Nigeria facilities.  Today women can be seen in all fields of endeavour.

I.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

At present, the growing rate of women participation in political, social, religious and economic activities is encouraging and needs to be sustained.

It is evident that a close study of the role of women in cooperative suggests that the development of our country could achieve quicker by the women emancipation through cooperative.

Since the role of women cannot be over emphasized every man needs the assistance of a women one way or the other for continuity.

Women emancipation has become one of the tasks for leaders in Nigeria and especially Nwanne di na mba women cooperative of Asata.  This research work is therefore geared toward investigating why women of Nwanne di na mba of Asata restricted form all political, social and economic activities.

Also it aimed at ascertaining to what extent their membership of cooperative has helped to free them from these restriction all with a view to suggest possible ways or approaches which may help in connecting or changing the situation through cooperative societies.
