CHAPTER ONE
Candle, which is a round stick of wax with a piece of string (candle wick) through the middle that is hit to give light as it burns serves as a substitute to other means of light. In other to achieve this, a mechanized system known as candle moulding machine is then put forward to boost the production. The first ever-recorded candle-moulding machine was made of iron bars, welded flat of four by four stands and covered with jute materials. Due to integration of certain properties, this was replaced with hard wood, but hard wood could not stand the test of time due to wear and lack of other desirable properties. Also the mild steel iron pipes of different diameters were used with raffia but all these could not get to the major requirement of the machine to ease production and to save coat.
However, most of the machines are complicated in their design and their operations require the knowledge of skilled men and personnel to supervise the operation. Infact it’s not only this, the cost of importing them here is mostly high. We now resolved pragmatically the candle-moulding machine in order to meet the world standard and requirements.
This machine possesses the same principle as the bigger one for large-scale production. This one works on the principle of casting. Candle making can be described as the casting of wax into stick forms. The molten wax is poured into the mould cavity and it’s allowed to solidify.
The machine has a moulding box having sixty-four (64) mould cavities each appropriately spaced from the other. A vessel containing a cool ant surrounds the moulding box. This has ejecting system comprising the push rod, and the jack with which force is applied when the ejector is activated by the jack causing the push rod to move up-wards.
There are also the inlet and outlet holes for cool ant in and discharge respectively. While melting of the wax is external to the machine and pouring is done as soon as the wax becomes molten.
While on research for the fabrication of candle moulding machine a lot of difficulties confronted us. This leads to our constrained in producing a manually operated candle-moulding machine. These problems are as follows.
There were no enough materials for broad research on this project to create a potential difference. Materials like the textbook to give or stand as guideline on the advancement in the fabrication of the candle-moulding machine. Our aim is to modernize the existing one’s that has been produced in the school and around the world. The information gathered from them could only help us to develop a similar candle mould, through with much addition in the number of mould cavities and cool ant discharges mechanism.
Due to financial constrained we find it difficult to carried out more research on the project. We could only visit libraries within our environment, which assisted us on the little we have done so far.
1.23 TIME FACTOR
This project is scheduled within a particular period of time. This could not permit the detail and thorough research to be done. We then try our possible best to achieve the research and the production within this scheduled time.
1.24 MARKET DEMAND
In the course of this study, the factory to be considered most is the market demand. We expect the patronage that can be given to this machine even when it is designed elaborately with high cost of production. Technology development has come-up with many inventions which are close substitute for candle. The invention of rechargeable leathern for which the like is gradually phasing off the use of candle. If huge money is invested in developing automatic candle moulding machine, the cost of purchasing the machine becomes high and consequently it’s substitute would be considered
1.25 ALIGNMENT OF THREAD
From the previous production, it has been observed that the existing candle-mouding machine has a poor mechanism for centering the wick in the candle wax. This is one of the major problem encounters in the production of this machine.
1.26 MELTING/POURING
The melting section is not incorporated in the machine, which is done external to the machine. That is the designed of a type of machine having melting apartment has not come true. There is also the problem of designing the machine so that pouring and the solidification is achieved at the same time.
There are various aims and objectives why investigation should be carried out on the production of candle moulding machine. The aims are dependent of the problems of the candle-moulding machine, which are indented for solutions to the problem encountered in the related project particularly the previous project done by our predecessor in this school. Here are the aims and objectives of the investigation on the candle-moulding machine.
1.3.1 REDUCTION OF COST OF PRODUCTION
While we are engaged in the production of this machine at a minimum economic level. We have selected 0a material that is cheap when compared with other related materials. The mild steel, though hot cheap, is as good as, the other, which is costly. We also put into c
