This present study is aimed to know whether Nigerian Television authority really plays an effective role on rural development of Ishiagu community or not.
In obtaining the scientific conclusion, the research method used in this study was sample survey, and systematic random sampling was adopted in sample selection. After data collection through the questionnaire presentation and coding analysis, the researcher found that the result gave credence to the fact that Nigerian Television Authority Abakaliki, played an effective role on the rural development of Ishiagu in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
It therefore recommends that there is the need to upgrade and maintain communication facilities to expand the areas of coverage to enable the rural dwellers who did not have access to NTA Programme to enjoy the derivables accruing from the medium. It also recommends that government should extend her rural electrifications to the rural communities of Ebonyi State so that the rural dwellers can have access to power to be used in their television sets in order to share from the benefits coming from NTA Ababkaliki.
The role mass media, especially the broadcast media can play on rural development has generated a lot of debate and has turned out to be a topic of great concern since there are other competing developmental factors such as education. The debate came up as a result of the importance of information and communication in national development.
Therefore, in a complex society like ours, the role that the media, especially television plays for effective rural development cannot be over emphasized. This is because, the media as the fourth estate of the realm have other vital roles to play such as education, motivation, entertainment etc to the current campaigns for effective rural development apart from its traditional role as the fourth arm of government.
A strong notion held by the analysts and commentators alike shows clearly that, despite the visual impact of television on education and entertainment, the audience is of the views that the programmes of television induced the rural residents towards developing their rural communities.
From the foregoing, therefore bearing in mind the continuous existence of developmental programmes of Nigerian Television Authority, the study shall take a step to examine the role which NTA Abakaliki has played in the development of Ishiagu.
