CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

 

Small – scale business or industries has characterized the existence of mankind and has played dominant role in this attempt to survive. And the industries exist in all areas of human endeavour, ranging from the primary occupation to more recent industrial and technological innovation.

Today, it is a fact that more than 80% of industries in Nigeria fall within the small scale category. And have played significant role in the development of the economic and social values of the Nigeria economy. Thus, these project works will develop into the fundamental function and roles as it affects the gross domestics product of the economy.

Small-scale industries are dominated by the role proprietorship, few exist as partnership or joint ventures. Most of which produce for local consumption.

The capital resource for setting up small –scale industries in Nigeria usually come from savings and contribution by owners.

There are various forms of small-scale industries some which include, the gold simtty cream manufacturing industries, candle manufacturing industries, cellophane or polythene production and soap manufacturing industries. From these examples, it is evident that small –scale industries are mostly engaged in production process are loss complex and market is local.

In the course of this research therefore the researchers will expatiate on the activities of the small-scale enterprises with the view of identifying the critical role they play in the economic life of the owners and the impact they make on the economic life of the nation on a statistical brain.
