1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
An effective leadership has been widely acknowledged as a potent instrument for achieving organizational goals and objectives especially in the institute f management and technology (I.M.T), Enugu.
Leadership is an important aspect of managing. The ability to lead effectively is one of the keys to be an effective manager. The essence of leadership of is follower-ship. In other-words, it is the willingness of people to follow those whom they perceive as providing means of achieving their own desires, wants and needs not those who would not provide means of achieving their own desires, wants needs. That is why any organization that desires to achieve her objectives must have an effective and efficient leadership who knows how to apply all the management principles towards achieving her organizational goals. The leaders must be one who is willing to work with zeal and confidence. Zeal here reflects ardor, earnestness, and intensity in the execution of work and confidence reflects experience and technical ability. To lead is to guide, conduct direct and connivance others to do they want toward achieving organizational goal. Leaders should not be people who do not stand behind a group or organization to push and to prod but leaders should act to help a group achieve objectives with the maximum application of it’s capabilities.
This is kind of leadership we desire to have in our institution, especially in the institute on management and technology.
Furthermore, it should be noted that any organization without an effective and efficient leadership is like one driving a car without a headlamp in the night. This could be very dangerous and could also affect their chances of achieving their objectives. Most of the organizations that do not realize their goals could be attributed to inefficient and ineffective leadership.
For an institution like IMT, to realize all her laudable organizational goals and objectives should have an effective leadership who possesses all the qualities and characteristics traits.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The institute of management and technology IMT, Enugu has been one of he leading higher institution in Enugu state and in Nigeria today in terms of enhancing qualitative and quantitative education in both management and technology. One of he objectives is the integration of the individual with the society and the preparation of individuals for effective functions in the society.
To this regard, there have been concerted efforts made by both the federal and state government and even the governing council in IMT, in enhancement of the roles of the effective leadership in the achievement of her institution’s goals and objectives.
But in spite of all the efforts being made by these bodies, most higher institutions are still experiencing various problems in the attainment of their goals particularly in IMT. There is relatively low level in the standard of education, problems of incessant strike actions and school and closure, general laxity among staffs and the union leaders. Mismanagement of funds by those the helms of affairs, there is relatively low level of productivity as most personnel are not putting in their best, poor planning and implementation, poor institutional relations between the management and their subordinates. As this will never bring fruitful result in the achievement or organizational goal especially in IMT.
Therefore, the objective of this institute in this regard has not been comprehensively met. One can therefore safely assume that when one had passed through an institution like IMT, one will be well equipped or prepared for participatory and leadership roles in the development of the Nigeria society. This gives rise to the following pertinent questions as regards to the above mentioned problems. What goals are they expected to pursue? What impact would their roles have on the employee’s utilization of capability? What leadership styles and the best climate would enable them achieve the institution’s objective? What other possible ways would be recommended towards the realization of these goals and objectives?
1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
