INTRODUCTION
Road transport is one of the oldest means of transportation. Before the advent of other means of transportation like airplanes, ships etc road transport has been in existence. This is because it has so many advantages when compared to other means of transport. Even before motorcars were introduced, people were making use of camels and donkeys to carry themselves and their goods from one place to the other. Road transportation saves cost, and can penetrate into the interior areas where other means of transport cannot go. Transportation feature very much in man’s daily activities as he works or does other activities in life.
Civilization brought about changes in improvements in the existing means of transport. Various types of cars were introduced that enhances the movement of people and goods. Journey that used to take days to accomplish is now done in hours.
However, road transportation is not without its constraints. These constraints are:-
These are some of the problems been encountered in road transportation.
This study examines these problems and will try to make recommendation on how these problems could be solved to make road transportation easier using Chisco transport company limited as a case study. This study covers the company’s transport system, its’ services to the public, the problems hindering its performance as well as to offer strategies to solving these problems.
Such strategies when applied will help the company and other transport companies to reduce its problems and enhance their services to the public.
Osuju, .L. O. (1988) “ Road Transportation in Nigeria” Nigeria Journals of marketing defined transportations as the movement of goods and people from one place to the other. In other words, it can be described as a system that links a start with the end or an origin with destination. This is one of the benefits we derive from transportation services. It has also its negative effects on the economy of the country.
The dilapidated nature of our roads both urban and rural has also helped to worsen the problems of road transportation in the country. The vehicles under the fleet of chisco transport company limited has not been able to complete the number of its guarantee because of the deplorable state of our roads.
There is also the incessant scarcity of fuel and gas which makes the vehicles not to operate regularly so as to met people/travelers demand.
It is the need to fund answers to the problems of road transportation and identify strategies to solving them that motivated the researcher to undertake this study.
In carrying out this study, the researcher met with some difficulties foremost amongst them and time limit. The time given for the completion of the project was too short, the researcher also encountered the problem of lack of co-operation some of the respondents. Some staff of chisco transport company limited refused to grant interviews or even respond to the questionnaires administered to them.
Some argued that such answers could implicate them, while others claim that they are too busy attend to the researcher.
Finance was also another problem encountered by the researcher on the course of this study. The researcher also encountered the problem of scarce literature to review. Literature and textbooks peculiar to road transport is scarce.
This however, does not mean that the research work was not properly carried out. It is the view of the researcher that these limitations are not enough to invalidate the result of the research.
