THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF WORKERS LOW PRODUCTIVITY (A CASE STUDY OF NIGERIA MINERAL WATER PLC 9TH MILE CORNER NGWO, ENUGU STATE)

ABSTRACT

The causes of workers low productivity in Nigeria mineral water, plc, 9th mile, Enugu cannot be over emphasized. Due to the claims that the causes and effects of workers low productivity in most organizational set up, be it public or private is due to poor human relationship that exist between the employees and their employees, the researcher therefore, investigated to find out other causes that relate to this problem.

The study stated by examining and finding out other causes of workers low productivity which shows that environmental conditions, poor wages, inappropriate incentives, retraining of staff and inappropriate ways of motivating their workers are also involved.

The review of related literature forms the title of chapter two. In this chapter, various points are highlighted such as the causes of workers low productivity, effects of workers low productivity as well as factors that may improve workers low productivity such as right incentives, managerial skills.

The methodology of the study is given in chapter three. Here, the procedures and method of the analysis of data were specified and these include the chi square method of hypothesis testing. The data and information gathering techniques were also indicated.

The data presentation, analysis and interpretation were done in chapter four. Here, the actual data analysis was carried out and the hypothesis was tested.

Based on the findings of the study, the researcher made some recommendation that in her opinion would to a large extent be useful to any person who may have one form of contact with his project.

1.0     INTRODUCTION

Productivity has become one of the most over riding concerns in organisation, economist, politicians, community leaders, civil servant, supervisor and elected officials look to it as the key force to bring jobs vitality and growth to our economy. Executive managers and business see it as the means for improving profit, competition and costs. Labourers, workers and employees see it as the means for enlarging their compensation benefit.

Government officers, public administrations and civil servants hope that it will balance budget, release more resources and improve services. Educational administrators, teachers and researchers look to productivity as a means to reach more students Improve the learning process and expand budgets. There is no doubt that productivity improvement appears to be the key to meeting the expectations of many individuals and groups. Productivity is the measure of how well resources are brought together in organisation and utilized for accomplishing set out results. George Koper, 1975 acting executive directors of the national commission on productivity sees productivity as combination of effectiveness and efficiency to resource utilization. To measure whether productivity is low or high in organisation, productivity index was used. When the productivity processes are at their low ebb, we say that there is the most destructive agent in the organizational set up which will have effect in the economy of the nation.

In this project, emphasis will be laid on the effect and causes of workers low productivity in Nigeria mineral water, plc Onitsha and its possible solutions.

 

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The causes and effects of workers low productivity in an organizational establishment cannot be over emphasized. These causes of workers low productivity such as strikes, absenteeism. Poor salary, poor human relationship, lack of retraining of staff were at one time primarily problems of the factories and were commonly viewed as being peculiar to the white collar workers. But today, these problems are as common to the  offices and companies (production) as they are to the shop floor. Now employees group in the country is changing rapidly as the white-collar jobs. One consequence of that growth has been the repaid erosion of the mutual loyalty that once bound the workers and employee together. Eli Gin berg (1908), elucidates findings and conclusions based on this when he discussed that centrality of work in human life and stated that human resources are the key to economic development.
