INTRODUCTION

  1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In banking, there is a great need for information. This s because, all things being equal, quality information could good decisions, good decisions should load to effective performance of managerial functions and effective functional performance should had to the attainment of organisational goals. The need for performance is greater in banking because of the nature of the business. Quida and accurate decisions must be taken for instance in the money market, in the foreign exchange market to mention but a few. Bank must react quickly to change in interest rate and other volatile variables in their operations.

To satisfy the banks need for information, the computer has been found to be an invaluable aid. According to Vaughan (1969:11) “for the individual banks, the pressure to automate (its information processing) usually result from one or two causes the bank may be experiencing over load in the operation areas which traditionally book-keeping equipment cannot handle or it may be looking towards future development in the banking industry with an eye in the direction of improving its competive position. The first can be defined as a short-term cure which mainly falls under the heading of operational pressure, while the second can be defined as a long-term cure falling under the beading of policy planning.

On this note, the researcher is studying the impact of computerization in First Bank of Nigeria Plc (FBN) Okpara Avenue, Enugu

A PROFILE OF FIRST BANK F NIGERIA PLC

First Bank of Nigeria Plc was established on 31st march 1894 with bank of British West Africa (BBWA) as the name. This bank which was registered in Liverpool, London had it Nigerian branch in Lagos which commenced business in August 1894. After seven years of operation in Nigeria, the second branch was opened in Calabar.

          At the boards extra – ordinary meeting of June 157, a “special resolution was passed to change the name of the company by dropping the word" British “ which was see as a colonial tag to bank of west Africa (BWA)

          In November 1, 1976, the name was again changed from BWA to Standard Bank of West African components who wanted to maintain its districtive identity with West Africa started to disenage three years latter obtained local incorporation. the Nigeria component became Standard Bank of Nigeria Ltd (SBN)

          In order to re-establish its real identity, SBN was, change to First Bank of Nigeria Ltd in October 1st 1979 and later became First Bank of Nigeria Plc a name it is bearing to date.

          The bank has grown from strength to strength and has the highest number of branches spread all over the country than any other bank in Nigeria. Because of its size, the bank was split into five religions for administrative purposes. They are tabulated as follows.

  1. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The computerization of the financial institutions ought to be seen as a good Omen but the reverse is the case. The problematic is therefore identifying:

  1. First Bank is still not fully computerized as a result frequent breakdown in their computers. This is a real problem because most of their works still done manually.
  2. Customers still stay long hours in the First bank despite the use of computers. This is likely to lead to lose of patronage from the would be customers.
  3. The management information system is not efficient as a result, information so obtained cannot be fully recorded.
  4. The management information system (MIS) is not fully utilized to the benefit of the accounting functions of the bank.
    1. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The aim of this study is as follows:

  1. To find out whether First Bank is fully computerized or whether some of their work are still done manually.
  2. To investigate whether the introduction of computer has reduced the time customers spend in the First Bank.
  3. To investigate whether management information system is efficient and whether the informations obtained are fully recorded.
  4. To identify whether the management information system (MIS) is fully utilized to the benefit of the accounting functions of the bank.
    1. SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study is on First Bank of Nigeria Plc DGM’s office at Okpara Avenue Enugu metropolis. The study involves some randomly selected staff of all categories in the bank.

  1. RESEARCH QUESTIONS

In order to the beautiful work this project, the following were the research questions formulated.

  1. What are the difficulties faced by the use of computers in your bank?
  2. What are the factors that give rise to the constant break down of computers in your bank?
  3. Why is it that decision making are often delayed by the management?
  4. Computerization ought to be a saving grace to both the bank and the customers, but in spite of its application, there are still long delays of customers. What are the causes of this problem?
  5.  
    1. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

A conclusive study on the impact of computerization in First Bank will be of immense benefits to the bank who may use it to reshape their approach to computerization.

Should the recommendations be adopted, the customers will be the beneficiaries of quida and adequate bank services.
