The economy of Nigeria as it were had a lot of structural distorters in the 1980s. This was based on the economic policies pursued prior to 1985; however, the measure of control introduced between 1982 and 1986 were unable to improve the economy positively, instead that period was characterized by short supply of industrial inputs, plants closure, large retrenchment of workers, etc. However, the importance of banks t the economy cannot be overemphasized. Hence the researcher in a quest to delve in the impact of deregulation of the economy on the performance of commercial banks has chosen to critically identify and analyze the impact of the deregulation by the government on banks with particular interest in First Bank of Nigeria PLC. The aim is to identify the important and benefit of deregulated economy with particular reference to commercial banks in general and First Bank of Nigeria PLC. in particular, the benefit therefrom and to make recommendation on how to make or improve commercial banks performance in a deregulated economy. The deregulation as it affects the banking industry involved the introduction of the following policy measures.
Furthermore, for the researcher to achieve this purpose, both primary and secondary data will be collected.
Thereafter bring out recommendation based on findings on why deregulation of the economy viz.; commercial banks will bring out the best for the economy.
Recently, the removal of subsidies is part of the process of deregulation that the government believes is the best solution to the problem of instability in the oil sector. These where the words of Mr. President in his broadcast to the nation on June 15th 2000, after a hike in the prices of petroleum products. However, since federal government has the deregulation as the only permanent solution to fuel problem, the banking industry needs to anticipate and sensitize itself to the challenges of a deregulated economy. The banking industry also needs to appropriately reposition itself to the full advantage of the gains that might arise from deregulation.
Deregulation will definitely pose some challenges to the banking industry. However, the ability to cope with the high demand for bank loan with competitive lending rates the ability to effectively manage credit risk, the level of expertise in investment be the important determinants of success for banks.
