CHAPTER ONE

1.0  INTRODUCTION

Belief, according to concise English Dictionary, is an acceptance that something exists or is true, especially one without proof.

Misconception is said to be a false or mistaken view or opinion. Misconceptions have been causing great harm to women’s health, especially the reproductive health, among various societies in the developing centuries. These misconceptions had been harming the cause of women’s health in the developed world even few decades ago (Carma Wadley, 2011).

While these misconceptions are largely done away within the developed world, the under-developed and developing world is still suffering widely due to all those misconceptions. The misconceptions of some foods having a negative effect on the mother and foetus has got stronger sheet anchor in the developing world due to traditional superstitions, illiteracy, poverty, lack of adequate and proper information along with traditional cultural belief. A balanced, nutritious diet is an important aspect of a healthy pregnancy. Eating a healthy diet, balancing carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, and eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, usually ensures goods nutrition (Wikipedia). Those whose diets are affected by health issues, religious requirements, or ethical beliefs may choose to consult a health professional for specific advice.

Misconceptions and ignorance around nutrition in pregnancy still persists today especially in rural areas despite the prevalence of medical and other information. Myths, especially vary from culture to culture but beliefs are also reflected in the general level of education available if women have particularly limited access to information, and instead belief old wives tales’ or religious dogma, there is then a higher likelihood of them blaming themselves and each other for bad pregnancy outcomes.

1.1  STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Nutritional problem is one of the problems facing developing (rural) communities like Ejezie-Izuogu. People do not eat every available food, despite the best of advice. The pregnant women deprive themselves of some foods that are nutritious due to old notions about the effect of these foods on their developing baby in the womb.

Hence, they starve in the midst of plenty because of certain food belief in addition to poverty, unavailability, and low priority accorded them in the family food distribution.

1.2  SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

After the research, the old notions and beliefs about foods will be eliminated, and the people will understand that the foods contain some important nutrients that will keep them healthy.

It will help the pregnant women to eat nourishing foods without having fear of any after effect.
