ABSTRACT
The study was designed to determine the serum levels of trace elements ( zinc, copper, selenium), minerals (magnesium, calcium, phosphorus), and antioxidants ( vitamin A,
vitamin C, vitamin E and glutathione peroxidase) in patients with prostate cancer (before and after surgery), as well as in patients with cervical cancer and control subjects.
Mineral determination was carried out using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. High-performance liquid chromatography was used for vitamin A, C and E determination.
Glutathione peroxidase activity was determined by the method of Ozdemir et al, 2005. In prostate cancer patients, the mean levels of Cu (169.75 +67.05), iP (3.83+1.31) were
significantly increased p(<0.05) when compared with the control, Cu (126.40+31.24) and iP(3.46+0.49) respectively. The mean levels of Se (0.77+0.65),Ca (4.11+1.55), Mg
(1.34+0.72), vit E (0.39+0.21,) and vit C (3.62+1.81) were significantly decreased
(P<0.05) when compared with the control Se (1.47 +0.30), Ca (4.85 +0.15), Mg
(2.03+0.24), vit E (1.40+0.45) and vitamin C (12.16+4.07) respectively.
After prostate surgery, the mean levels of Zn (138.02±60.35)μg/dl, Cu
(175.82±19.26)μgldl, Se(0.63±0.44)μmol/l, Ca (4.05±1.96)mg/dl, vitamin
A(0.32±0.30)mg/l, vitamin C(3.61±1.81)mg/dl and vitamin E (0.39 ±0.31)mg/dl were
significantly lower (P<0.05) than the level before prostate surgery on the same patients,
Zn (168.75±67.05)μg/dl, Cu(187.76±21.05)μg/dl, Se (0.77±0.65)μmol/l Ca (4.11±
1.67)mg/dl, vitamin A (0.37±0.22)mg/l, vitamin C (4.06 ±1.82)mg/dl and vitamin E
(0.451±0.27)mg/dl respectively.
The mean level of Mg(1.53±0.85)mg/dl and iP(4.10±1.40)mg/dl after prostate surgery
were significantly higher (P<0.05) when compared with the levels before prostate surgery
Mg(1.34±0.72)mg/dl and iP(3.83±1.31) mg/dl respectively.
In patients with cervical cancer, the mean level of Cu(230.30±40.80)μg/dl, was
significantly higher (P<0.05) when compared with that of control subjects
(134.44±33.33)μg/dl. The mean level of Se(0.53±0.36)μmol/l, Mg(1.54±0.66)mg/dl,
glutathione peroxidase (0.35±0.31)ng/ml, vitamin A (0.21±0.21)mg/l, vitamin
C(3.62±1.62)mg/dl and vitamin E (0.40±0.42)mg/dl were significantly lower (P<0.05)
when compared with that of control subjects, Se(1.48±0.31)μmol/l, mg(2.14±0.26)mg/dl,
Glutathione peroxidase (1.94±0.63)ng/ml, vitamin A (0.78±0.28)mg/l, vitamin C
(11.71±3.53)mg/dl, vitamin E (1.21±0.52)mg/dl respectively.
In prostate patients, the levels of calcium were lower and it may be because of the
cytotoxic drugs they are placed on after surgery. Inorganic phosphate and magnesium
were significantly higher although it is within the normal range. It may be associated with
surgical infusions or probably phosphate and magnesium supplements after prostate
surgery. Inadequate dietary intake of antioxidant vitamins may result to lowered
antioxidant vitamins.
In cervical cancer patients, the lower antioxidant vitamins may be as a result of oxidative
stress which may lead to depletion of the antioxidant vitamins in the body. Routine
assessment is recommended since vitamins and minerals help to boost the immune
system, thereby enhancing recovery.
